Longhorn Cavern State Park
— Historic Building

Longhorn Cavern was designated a registered National Landmark under the provisions of the Historic Sites Act of August 21, 1935. This site possesses exceptional value in illustrating the natural history of the United States. - National Register.

During the Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) made many improvements to the park.  With great workmanship, they used native limestone and timber to construct buildings, retaining walls, and an observation tower.

On the way out of the park, if you have the time, drive over to the observation tower (follow the signs) and climb up the iron spiral stairs to the top, where you can get a fantastic 360-degree view of the Texas Hill Country.  On bright sunshiny days you can see 45-60 miles away.

The CCC projects were well built and most are still in use today.  Interpretive exhibits that describe the work are housed in the old administrative building located next to the visitors’ center.
