LONGHORN
CAVERN STATE PARK, BURNET, TEXAS - Geology programs
to be given by Al Gerow, on site geologist for Longhorn
Cavern State Park. Programs are held by
reservation - min. 10 people. One special
program includes a one-hour 25-minute geological
tour of Longhorn Cavern and 30-minute geological
seminar (minimum 10 people required). Another
extended geological program includes the above and a
field trip to a local road cut. (minimum 10 people required).
Longhorn
Cavern was formed of limestone of the Ellenburger
type, said to have come from the Ordovician age.
The cave was then created by a combination of forces, such as abrasion and solution.
Longhorn Cavern has formations visible today, such
as: calcite channels, crystals, columns, draperies,
solution domes and many more. All have been of great
interest to many students and geologists alike.
