Longhorn Cavern State Park
— Geology Program

LONGHORN CAVERN STATE PARK, BURNET, TEXAS - Geology programs to be given by Al Gerow, on site geologist for Longhorn Cavern State Park. Programs are held by reservation only. One special program includes a one-hour 25-minute geological tour of Longhorn Cavern and 30-minute geological seminar. Another extended geological program includes the above and a field trip to a local road cut.

 

 

Longhorn Cavern was formed of limestone of the Ellenburger type, said to have come from the Ordovician age. The cave was then created by a combination of forces, such as abrasion and solution. Longhorn Cavern has formations visible today, such as: calcite channels, crystals, columns, draperies, solution domes and many more. All have been of great interest to many students and geologists alike.
